Wheel Kids operates weekly summer camp sessions from late May through late August. Each week includes bicycle skills learning activities, destination-oriented rides, play time on and off the bike, special events and visitors, and a field trip. Riders are welcome to attend as many sessions as desired to experience the full range of our activities. We ask that every effort be made to have your child attend on the first day of the session, when we'll review rules and get acquainted. Our hours are 8:30 to 4:00 M-F, with extended hours from 8:00 to 6:00.
Come for a week, a month, all summer. The Wheel Kids experience is built around our weekly adventures. Each week we explore new ideas and activities, dividing our days into structured and unstructured time. The schedule below is an outline: we often change plans during the day if we find unforeseen opportunities awaiting us.
Mondays are devoted to getting to know each other, to assessing and working on cycling skills with short rides and a BikeCircus. Every other Monday we'll visit the Sports Basement's Presidio store to learn some bike maintenance skills from the mechanics in the bicycle shop.
Tuesdays we head down the Embarcadero to explore the Ferry Building Farmers Market. Some days we'll ride as far as Mission Bay, others we'll visit AT&T Park, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf or other waterfront attractions.
Wednesdays see us exploring the natural environment of the San Francisco shoreline and Presidio. We may explore the Crissy Field wetlands, explore the shoreline at the Wave Organ or get our hands dirty in the forests and meadows of The Presidio. We also have another BikeCircus to hone our riding skills.
Thursdays are our field trip days, which are explained further below.
Fridays are unstructured days devoted to riding and playing, and often include a crossing of the Golden Gate Bridge or our Tour of the Presidio ride (a definite favorite of our riders!). Whatever interested us during the week is what we'll seek out on Friday. We'll also review the cycling skills we've learned, and clean and lube our bikes after a successful week of camp.

Here are our field trips and special events for this summer's sessions. Field trips are taken by ferry or by school bus (a truck follows along with our bikes).
Week 1 (May 29 - June 1): Angel Island
This week is full - please contact us if you'd like to be placed on the waitlist. The ferry takes us to Angel Island, a great place to ride as far as we want on paved, car-free roads or to explore beaches and historical sites.
Week 2 (June 4 - 8): Coyote Point
Our bus takes us to Coyote Point's CuriOdyssey and a ride along the Bay Trail to waterfront parks and playgrounds.
Week 3 (June 11 - 15): Hellyer Velodrome
This week is full - please contact us if you'd like to be placed on the waitlist. We go by bus to San Jose's Hellyer Velodrome, one of only three velodromes on the west coast, to learn about track riding and bicycle racing and to ride the trails along Coyote Creek nearby.
Week 4 (June 18 - 22): China Camp
The bus will drop us off at China Camp State Park in San Rafael where we'll tour the historic shrimp fishery and ride some awesome off-road trails. On Wednesday we'll have a special tour and activity at the Presidio Archaeology Lab.
Week 5 (June 25 - 29): Corte Madera
Taking the ferry to Larkspur Landing, we'll ride nearby trails to Corte Madera Town Park, then loop back to the ferry along the Larkspur slough and ride through the new bike tunnel to San Rafael. Advanced riders will loop through Ross, San Anselmo and San Rafael before returning to the ferry. On Friday we'll ride to the Presidio's annual history celebration: Pasados del Presidio.
Week 6 (July 2 - 6): Tiburon & Sausalito Shoreline
We'll take the ferry to Tiburon for a ride to the Richardson Bay Audubon Center and a bike tour of Tiburon and Belvedere. Advanced riders will continue around Richardson Bay to the Sausalito ferry. This is a holiday week - no camp on Wednesday the 4th.
Week 7 (July 9 - 13): Hellyer Velodrome
It's Bastille Day and Le Tour at Wheel Kids, so we'll return to Hellyer Velodrome for more track and creekside trail riding and a review of current events at the Tour de France.
Week 8 (July 16 - 20): Marine Mammal Center
Our bus ride is to the Marin Headlands this week. We'll ride the trails of the Headlands then have a tour and classroom program at the Marine Mammal Center before our return to camp. Advanced riders will have an extended trail ride to the top of the Headlands rather than visit the Marine Mammal Center. On Wednesday we'll have a special tour and activity at the Presidio Archaeology Lab.
Week 9 (July 23 - 27): Angel Island
This week is full - please contact us if you'd like to be placed on the waitlist. The ferry takes us back to Angel Island for another tour of its car-free roads, beaches and historical sites. Advanced riders have the option of pursuing multiple laps of the island or the climb to the upper level, unpaved fire road.
Week 10 (July 30 - August 3): Coyote Hills Regional Park
We'll head by bus to the Bay shoreline in Fremont for a ride through the Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge and Coyote Hills Regional Park, a beautiful shoreline area with opportunities for bird watching, nature studies and paved and unpaved trail riding.
Week 11 (August 6 - 10): Sebastopol
The bus takes us to Santa Rosa and a ride on the Joe Rodota Trail into Sebastopol. There we'll visit Beekind to learn about bee keeping and beeswax and honey products, and participate in a candle-rolling lesson. Advanced riders will continue on the Joe Rodota Trail toward Forestville before joining the group at Beekind.
Week 12 (August 13 - 17): Stanford University
Stanford recently was named the only Platinum level Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists. We're going there to find out why. We'll explore its bike pathways, investigate the bicycle facilities used by students and faculty, and possibly meet with its bicycle coordinator. We'll also have lunch on campus and visit campus sites such as the Rodin Sculpture Garden, the Quad, Hoover Tower, etc. On Wednesday we'll have a special tour and activity at the Presidio Archaeology Lab. (note: this week's trip has been changed from the East Bay BMX and swim)
Week 13 (August 20 - 24): Sausalito Shoreline
We're ferry-bound to Sausalito again for an exploration of the boat harbors and maritime industries of Sausalito and a ride along the Mill Valley - Sausalito Bike Path.
Week 14 (August 27 - 31): U.S.S. Hornet
Wrap up your summer with a ferry ride to the Alameda NAS for a tour of the U.S.S. Hornet and a riding tour of the former base. Due to ferry schedules, we may arrive late on Thursday - we'll let parents know in advance. With most schools back in session this is likely to be a lightly attended camp week with a small group of riders.
* Schedule and events are subject to change. Minimum registration of 15 participants is required. Registered participants will be notified of cancelation due to insufficient registrations; a full refund will be provided. See Participant Agreement for refund/credit policy for all other circumstances. A waitlist will be available once registration is full.
