" ...he came home at the end of the day with the hugest smile on his face and a sense of accomplishment."
Wheel Kids' bicycle riding lessons help kids learn to ride a bike and become better riders. Our two and four hour weekend classes focus on two basic things to do on a bike: improve skills and have fun. We provide eight-week sessions for novice through advanced riders ages 5 through 15, in small group classes. Please contact us for private lessons, including lessons for older riders.
See our Rider Skill Categories to determine what class is best for your child. The first lesson will include an assessment by Wheel Kids coaches to determine if each rider is properly placed.
Spring Schedule
Classes are held on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Classes begin Saturday 24 March and end Sunday 20 May (no class on 7 or 8 April).
Location
Drop-off and pick-up at American Cyclery, 510 Frederick. Lessons occur in Golden Gate Park.
Classes*
Level One - Novice to Beginner Cyclist
Level One classes are for children not yet off training wheels or similar devices, or for those who still haven't mastered independent riding. The class focuses on the fundamental skill of bicycling - balance while in motion - with a goal of getting children riding on two wheels without assistance. Once accomplished, riders will work on starting, stopping, controlled slowing and turning.
Class 1.1 for 5 to 7 year olds. Class time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Class 1.2 for 8 to 12 year olds. Class time: 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Level Two - Advanced Beginner Cyclist
Level Two classes are for riders who have mastered basic bicycling balance and riding and are seeking improvements in bike handling and safety practices. This class emphasizes bike control and improved balance, especially at slow speeds, tight turns, while standing on the pedals and riding with one hand. Riders will be introduced to hand signals and longer ride opportunities.
Class 2.1 for 5 to 12 year olds. Class time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Level Three - Intermediate Cyclist
Level Three classes are for riders who are comfortable on their bike and are set to improve their skills and confidence. This class focuses on improving riding skills with an emphasis on bicycle handling in a variety of situations. Riders will learn how to maintain steady speeds and cadence, corner effectively on pavement and dirt, climb and descend, traverse curbs, steps and similar obstacles, use proper hand signals and use multi-use pathways.
Class 3.1 for 5 to 12 year olds. Class time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Level Four - Advanced Cyclist
Level Four classes are for riders looking for opportunities to engage in longer rides within and beyond San Francisco and who wish to improve their riding skills and increase their knowledge of safety, way-finding and maintenance practices. Riders will participate in on- and off-street rides as well as "classroom style" discussions and demonstrations. Due to the length of the rides and the on-street riding, riders must have the stamina and be sufficiently mature/focused to ensure their own and the group's safety (see age range below). Note that this is a four hour class. Periodic activity fees may be requested (e.g., for a ferry trip back to San Francisco from Sausalito or Tiburon).
Class 4.1 for 10 to 15 year olds. Class time: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
